Senior Moves in Columbus: How to Plan One That Feels Calm
A senior move is different from a first-apartment move. There are more years of stuff, more feelings attached to it, and often a smaller place at the other end. The move goes better when the plan leaves room for all of that.
Moore Movers does the lifting, and we go at your pace. Here's how to set the day up so the pace can be slow.
Start the Sorting Early
The biggest cause of a stressful move day is deciding what to keep on move day. Start weeks ahead, one room at a time. Pick the room with the least emotion in it first (a hall closet, the garage) and save photos, books and the kitchen for later.
Use three piles: goes to the new place, goes to family, goes out. Mark the first pile with tape or a sticker so the crew can see it at a glance.
Measure the New Place Before You Pick Furniture
Know the doorways, the hallway widths and where the bed will go. A bedroom set that fit a four-bedroom house may not fit an apartment bedroom. Sketch the room on paper and place the big pieces first. Whatever doesn't fit is a decision to make before move day, not during it.
Book a Day That Isn't Rushed
Weekday rates are lower than weekend rates. Our weekday rate runs $70 to $130 per hour by zone, and the weekend rate is higher in every zone (see the pricing page). There is a 2-hour minimum. If a Tuesday works, you get a quieter building, easier parking and a better rate.
Build in extra time instead of squeezing the job into a tight window.
Plan the First Night
Pack an essentials box that rides with you, not on the truck: medications, glasses, chargers, phone numbers, a change of clothes, bedding, a kettle or coffee maker. Set up the bed first, so the first night in the new place is a normal night.
Keep the Paperwork Handy
Keep the lease or closing documents, the building contact and any elevator reservation in one folder. Many retirement communities and apartment buildings need to schedule the elevator and may limit move times. Call the front desk a week ahead.
Family Can Help From a Distance
You don't need to be in town to help plan. A son or daughter in another state can talk with the building, confirm the date and handle the booking. Tell us who will be at the home on move day so the crew knows who to ask.
